I think game stuff works best when grounded in a setting. While this could work generically, it works better in the Breathing World. It is almost system neutral, and could certainly be used for other systems.
To sum up: the dwarves are the newcomers to the world. Humans are one of the oldest races, jockeying with goblins for that honor. The dwarves (called Stonach) have only been around for about 2,000 years of the 11,000 year history, they are the newest race.
They were created by the gods to help hem in the world, because it was rubbing against death energies, demonic energies, and all kinds of unpleasant neighbors. If the world was conquered by alien energies, even the gods would perish. So, they used the energy flowing through the world to create a people who could make barriers for them, to seal the dimension better. They made the stonach and the priest caste, the ghim.
As the new kids on the block, the prickly stonach feel they have to clean up everyone else’s mess, that they can keep track of all their history since hardly any of it is lost in the mists of time so far, and that they are the ones who save the world. This gives them a bit of a grumpy entitlement combined with overcompensation for being the last ones to the party.
